Dr. Edson was born and raised on a small farm in Eastampton, NJ. He attended elementary and middle school in Eastampton and graduated from Rancocas Valley Regional High School in 2001. Matt completed his Paramedic certification (MICP) through Virtua Health, and he then went on to graduate from Rutgers Cook College with a double major in Animal Science and Biology (BS). Four years later, he graduated from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree (entrepreneurship concentration) from Rowan University’s Rohrer College of Business.
His work experience has been varied. Past jobs have included a stint as a cow milker at the old Sunnyside Dairy in Westampton, NJ, an ocean lifeguard for the Long Beach Township Beach Patrol, a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic for the Monmouth-Ocean Hospital Service Corporation, and an adjunct professor in the Science, Math, and Technology department at Burlington County College.
He is a Past President of the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association, a former Site Visitor for the AVMA Council on Education, former Chair and Large Animal Representative on the AVMA Committee on Disaster and Emergency Issues, and former Vice Chair of the AVMA Practice Advisory Panel Pilot.
Dr. Edson is interested in many aspects of veterinary medicine, though he places an emphasis on equine, small ruminant, camelid, and pot-bellied pig medicine and surgery. He speaks both locally and nationally on the care of miniature pigs, backyard poultry, and backyard livestock. A strong interest in ultrasound led him to complete the comprehensive Small Animal Soft Tissue Imaging program at the Academy of Veterinary Imaging in 2018. He is also a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM).
He has a variety of animal family members, including his horses (Bud, Buddy, Albireo, and Sunny), a miniature donkey (Buster), a mule (Bo), two goats (Gomer and Tina), two pot-bellied pigs (Bea and Piggy Smalls), a Holstein steer (Ferdinand), a golden retriever (Shadow), a dachshund (Frankie), a dromedary camel (Boris), an emu (Dwight), and a cat (Vikki).
In 2021 Dr. Edson was appointed as the Founding Dean of the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University, New Jersey’s first veterinary school. While he is still the owner of the practice, he is not currently available for appointments.
